This painting was motivated by my impulse to visualize other realities, like life underwater seen from an unusual point of view, as well as by my personal obsession with playing around with the way the water’s surface distorts images. I’ve painted a few other pieces where the viewer looks past an aquatic prey subject to a distorted predator above, but this one is the most graphic and contrived composition in the bunch, with the egret’s head and breast plumes worked into the water ripples, and the upside-down-but-not-upside-down salamander in the lower left quadrant. |
