The Genus Phelsuma contains some 35 species distributed throughout Madagascar and the surrounding area. These lizards are collectively known as day geckos and include some of the most beautiful of all reptiles. The ornate day gecko (P. ornata) is endemic to the Mascarenes. There are two races: one on Reunion, and this one, found on Mauritius and a few nearby islets. As is standard for day geckos, these lizards forage in broad daylight for insects, nectar and pollen. The female cements two eggs to a tree truck or other substrate.
